A rough timeline
| Time | What happens | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1 to 4 | The fade blurs and softens | Nothing yet, or just a neckline tidy |
| Months 1 to 2 | Sides start to puff out | Clean neckline and ears, keep all length |
| Months 2 to 3 | Sides catch up with the top | Light shaping so it grows evenly |
| Months 3 to 4+ | Even length all over | Choose your new style |
Tips while it grows
- Tell your barber at every visit that you are growing it out
- A tidy neckline and clean edges make a big difference
- Use a light matte product to control puffy sides
- Caps and beanies are fine, but let your hair breathe
When you are ready
Once there is enough length, book a Total Restyle to shape the new style properly.
What to ask your barber
- "I am growing it out. Please do not take any length off the top."
- "Can you tidy the neckline and around the ears only?"
- "Can you shape the sides so they do not stick out?"
- "How long until I can get the style I want?"
Common mistakes
- Skipping the barber completely, which makes the awkward stage worse
- Cutting it yourself to fix puffy sides
- Using heavy, shiny products that make growing hair look greasy
- Giving up at the 6 to 8 week mark, which is usually the hardest point
