Check the policy first
Many schools publish a uniform or appearance policy on their website or in the enrolment pack. Look for rules on:
- Very short or shaved styles, including skin fades
- Lines, designs, or patterns cut into the hair
- Hair length touching the collar or eyes
- Colour
If it is unclear, ask the school before the haircut, not after.
Cuts that suit most schools
- Taper or low fade with length on top
- Classic short back and sides
- Scissor cut for longer styles
- Number all over, if the policy allows clipper cuts
Timing
The week before school goes back is one of the busiest times for barbers. Book early in the holidays, or a week or two before term, so you get a time that suits. Kids cuts usually need a tidy-up every 4 to 6 weeks.
Common school hair rules
Policies differ, but these come up often in Queensland school uniform and appearance policies:
- Hair kept neat, clean and off the face
- No extreme styles, such as very high skin fades or mohawks
- No lines, patterns or designs cut in
- Natural hair colours only
- Longer hair tied back
Always read your own school's policy. Only the school can tell you exactly what is allowed.
Bringing the policy to the appointment
Take a photo of the hair section of the policy on your phone and show it to the barber. It saves guesswork and means the cut is built to fit the rules from the start.
