Step by step
- Wash with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo 2 to 3 times a week. Rinse with water on other days.
- Use conditioner every time you wash, and leave it in for a minute or two.
- While the hair is still damp, apply a small amount of curl cream or leave-in conditioner.
- Scrunch the hair upward with your hands to encourage curl.
- Air dry, or use a diffuser on low heat. Do not rub with a towel.
- Once dry, avoid brushing. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to separate curls.
Which product?
| Product | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Curl cream | Soft, defined curls with moisture |
| Leave-in conditioner | Frizz control and dry hair |
| Light gel or mousse | More hold and defined curl clumps |
| Matte clay | A messier, textured look on shorter curls |
Start with a small amount. Too much product weighs curls down.
Best cuts for curly hair
- Curly top with a fade: short sides, curls kept on top
- Taper with curls: softer sides that grow out evenly
- Curly crop: a short textured top, very easy to manage
- Scissor cut: for longer curls, cut to keep shape and reduce bulk
Curls shrink as they dry, so tell your barber how long you want them to look dry, not wet.
