Which one should you choose?
Pick a skin fade if you want a clean, bold look and do not mind more frequent visits. Pick a taper if you want something tidy that works for school or work and still looks good a few weeks later. If you cannot decide, ask for a low taper first. It is easy to go shorter next time.
What to ask for at the chair
- Where the fade or taper should start: low, mid, or high
- How short you want the shortest point (skin, or a clipper number)
- How much length to keep on top
- Whether you want the neckline squared, rounded, or tapered
A photo is the fastest way to explain it.
How each one grows out
A skin fade starts to blur after about a week, because even a few millimetres of growth softens the contrast between skin and hair. By week three the line is usually gone. A taper changes much less as it grows, because it never starts at bare skin. That is why tapers suit people who cannot get to the barber every couple of weeks.
Pairing with the top
- Short textured top or crop: works with either, but a skin fade gives more contrast.
- Longer top or slick back: a taper keeps the look classic and balanced.
- Curly top: a mid skin fade frames curls well; a taper keeps it softer.
- Beard: a skin fade usually needs blending into the beard at the sideburns; a taper connects more naturally.
